The son of Henry & Mary (Etter) Snyder, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although the census for that township is virtually unreadable, although he is in the 1863-65 draft registration as a resident of then unincorporated York Haven within the boundaries of Newberry Township. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Goldsboro, York County, July 22, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. B, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was repeatedly treated for dysentery throughout his term of service but honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Goldsboro August 13, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 23 as a sergeant with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry. On April 2, 1865, he was ruptured during the final assault on the Confederate works outside Petersburg, Virginia, but honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865. He is in the company register as a private, although the roster reflected there is incomplete.

He married Margaret Ann Lockhart and fathered Emma Jane (b. 02/13/72) and John M. (b. 06/03/75). Margaret died January 25, 1877, and he married widow Jane Elizabeth McClure, née Ruth, July 5, 1878, in Middletown, Dauphin County, fathering Dora E. (b. 11/27/78), William Bean R. (b. 04/01/80), Christian R. (b. 03/02/82), and Eli R. (b. 09/15/91). In 1888, he was living in Lancaster County near Bellaire.

Although his parents did not give him a middle name, he eventually adopted the middle initial of "E" for his mother's maiden name because his mail was constantly being redirected to another John Snyder.
