The son of Eli H. & Catherine Heist (Detwiler) Ruth, he married Mary LNU., children if any unknown. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Harrisburg March 13, 1865, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. I. Wounded on April 2, 1865, during the final assault on the Confederate works outside Petersburg, Virginia, he died two days later in a military hospital at City Point (now Hopewell), Virginia.

His biography in The History of Dauphin County gets pretty much everything wrong by placing him with the 187th Pennsylvania Infantry and reporting his death "in front of Richmond" after having "served one week."

In 1890, Mary was living in Conoy Township, Lancaster County.
