The son of German-born Leopold & Barbara A. (Hummelstine) Santo, in 1860 he was a blacksmith but an inmate in Dauphin County Prison in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 3" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 31, 1862, as a private with Co. F, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 24, 1864, as a corporal with Co. G, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.
The 1890 Veterans' Schedule erroneously puts him into the 107th Pennsylvania Infantry and fails to mention the 201st Pennsylvania.
He married Mary A. lnu and fathered Mary (b. @1868). No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.
