A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 30, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 10 as bugler for Co. I, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry (161st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1865. He also served with Co. E, dates as yet unknown.
He married Mary Elizabeth Zarker December 20, 1874, in Lykens, Dauphin County, and fathered Harry E. (b. @1876), Sevilla A. (b. @1877), Mary Mary Elizabeth (b. 12/??/79 [death certificate says 1877] - married a Welty), Pearl Aguilla (b. 10/27/83), John Albert (b. 05/09/91), and Lester LeRoy (b. 08/21/97). He spent the last few years of his life working for the railroad. While on the job as a track walker near Docklow Station just east of Steelton, Dauphin County, he was struck and killed by the Pacific Express. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph opined that "he was unfamiliar with the running of the fast express trains" without additionally opining why someone had to be familiar with a train schedule to realize that one was bearing down on him. He was a member of Harrisburg's Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R.
