The son of Samuel D. & Nancy A. (Eichelberger) Saul, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 9, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 18 as a private with Co. B, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company Jun 23, 1865.

He married Mary Ann McDonel and fathered William Henry (b. 09/09/68), Sarah Jane (b. 1870), Emma C. (b. 07/08/71 - married William J. Koons), John W. (b. 1873, d. 1874), Charles E. (b. @1876), Kathryn Elizabeth (b. 06/3077 - married William F. Rounsley), Mary R. (b. 05/06/79 - married Edgar Samuel Koons), James L. (b. 1882, d. 1893), and Lillia M. (b. 1886, d. 1889). Cause of his death is listed as "valvular heart trouble."
