Rex was a two year old Doberman that served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat dog. During the Battle of Empress Bay at Bougainville Island (November, 01, 1943) he alerted fellow soldiers to the presence of Japanese soldiers allowing them to successfully repel the impending attack. Rex also served at Tinian and Guadalcanal. In 1944, he was promoted to Corporal in honor of his Marine Corps service.
