RICHFIELD TWP, OHIO -- A Richfield Twp. volunteer firefighter is dead after she stopped to assist at an early morning crash and was hit while directing traffic.

State Troopers say that Charlotte R. Adair, 45, of Swanton was on her way to work at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Swanton where she teaches fifth grade, when she stopped at a traffic accident at U.S. 20 and Fulton-Lucas Road. A tractor trailer had hit a van in the rear end, disabling both vehicles.

Adair was directing traffic around the accident scene when she was struck by an eastbound Ford Escape driven by Richard J. Bigras, 58, of Fayette. She was transported from the scene via air ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent's Medical Center where she later died.

According to the Holy Trinity Catholic School website, Mrs. Adair was married and the mother of two high school aged children. She was a volleyball coach for the C.Y.O. as well as a teacher and volunteer firefighter.

Known as "Charlie," to her fellow Richfield Twp. firefighters, she was a six year member of the department.

Friday morning, at morning mass, students prayed for Adair, not knowing that she'd died, according to Linda Justin, principal of Holy Trinity Catholic School. When word of her death reached the school, counselors were called in for students and staff and the parents of students in Mrs. Adair's classroom were contact. Most elected to go home with their parents, according to Justin.

"She died doing what she loved to do best," added Justin. "Helping people."

The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
