He resigned in February, 1862 as 1st Lieutenant with the 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later accepted a commission as Captain with the 23rd Ohio. He was born in Germany and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio before the war. He died while in the service from complications of old age at 70 years old.
