George was the second of nine children born to William Thomas and Grace Mae (Castle) Colvin. He married Clarice Verna Lee Lang in 1918 and they had six children: Ralph Maurice, Robert Leland, Ruth Verna Lee, George Hartwell, Donald Dean and Theodore Max.
