Folk Personality, Career Officer. Served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1942. In 1942, as a fresh 2nd Lieutenant he was part of the Marine platoon in the 1st Raider Battalion, then part of the 3rd Raider Battalion in 1943. During the Battle of Tarawa in 1943, George was General J. C. Smith's Aide de Camp, in the 2nd Marine Division. He was cited for gallantry, twice on Guadalcanal, and once on Tarawa. In 1944, he became an air cadet. That same year, he received his wings from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. He had 374.7 flight hours, 579 in Avenger torpedo bombers. He was the pilot of TBM Avenger "FT-117" [TBM-1C - BuNo 73209], that was part of the infamous Flight 19 squadron, that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle during a routine 5-ship overwater navigation training mission out of NAS Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
