Katherina (Katharina) Schoenhals

In the year of our LORD 1843, 22nd of September in the evening at 11:00 o’clock, the fifth child was born (fourth daughter) to Johannes Schoenhals 111, (citizen and shoemaker, and member of the Parish) and his wife Anna Elisabetha (born) Fink.

The child was baptized on the eighth of October and given the name KATHERINA.

Holding the child during the baptism was Katherina Schoenhals. Also present at the baptism was the father of the child and the Pastor who baptized the child and signed the paper.

Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany
As translated from the Parish Records of Ober Breidenbach, Oberhessen Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.

Katherina Schoenhals married John Arn on May 28, 1862 in Wheeling West Virginia.

The couple lived in West Virginia and Clarington OH but moved to Grove City Iowa near Atlantic, Cass County, IA about 1886.

John did farm work and farmed for himself. Later he worked for a long time for a nursery on 7th & Cherry Streets. in Atlantic IA.

Three of the couples eleven children came with their father to Iowa. Later, the others came from Ohio with their mother. The story was told about how in Chicago, eight-year-old Nora, made up with another woman, followed this person to her train at about the same time that the train to Atlantic was to leave. Because it took some time for Nora to be reunited with her mother, they missed their train to Atlantic. It was then necessary to board a later train to Audubon IA, then take a branch line to Atlantic. Here a man saw Mother and her family walking up the street and inquired who she was, then took her to a house to wait until her husband could be contacted to come from Grove City to get his family, having already met the earlier train in Atlantic, but with no family there. On the same trip, young Katie Arn had new shoes, which wore blisters on her feet making it necessary to wear bedroom slippers until blisters healed.

In the 1890s one of the Arn boys would take Grandma Katherine Arn to Union, Nebraska in a horse and buggy to see Aunt Rosie and family.

When Grandma Arn was sick, the family asked Jan (Bertha Burgess' sister) to come to the Arn home and sit up with Grandma Arn that night. Bertha went with her sister and stayed through the night. The following morning Harve took them home but returned within an hour as Grandma was so very sick.

She passed away within an hour after they got there. The cause of death was probably pneumonia. She may have also had cancer because she had a lot of bleeding prior to her death.
Katherine died March 29, 1899 in Atlantic, Iowa. Her tombstone was inscribed with the following:

Died March 29, 1899, Aged 55 Yrs 6 Ms 7 Ds
Just as the sun descends at even
Soon with fresher beams to rise
So to shall Mother dear receive
Life eternal in the skies"
