SHREVEPORT, LA - Royal Victor Bachman was a military man through and through: he trusted good authority and delighted in doing small tasks that contributed to a larger whole. He loved and honored his wife of 57 years and left this world dignified and quiet on the morning of January 19, 2011.
Born in Santa Ana, California, on July 18, 1921, Bachman grew up in Placerville, California, where he had his first job as a postman. He then joined the Army Air Corps and served as an aircraft radio operator in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, Bachman returned to Santa Ana for college and met his wife, Marilyn Willis. He reenlisted in the United States Air Force, which took his family across the world from Bremerhaven, Germany, to Peshawar, Pakistan, from Taipei, Taiwan, to Misawa, Japan. A lover of music, he conducted the chancel choirs at several Air Force base chapels while his wife played the organ. Bachman was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and he retired after 26 years as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Arts and community defined Bachman's retirement years in San Antonio, Texas, and San Diego, California, and finally in Shreveport since 1999. He became an expert bread maker, conducted extensive genealogical research, and crafted beautiful needlepoint pieces: he made intricate Christmas stockings for most of his grandchildren. He loved Bible study and worshipped in a local Disciples of Christ church wherever he lived, having a special fondness for Torrey Pines Christian Church in La Jolla, California, and Kings Highway Christian Church in Shreveport.
Preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Orval Bachman and Lottie Belle Zerby; his siblings; and his wife, Marilyn Ann Willis Bachman. He is survived by three daughters: Vicki Gilbreath, of Shreveport, Louisiana; Nancy Phifer Glass with husband Randy, of Elysian Fields, Texas; and Karen Bunjes with husband Karl, of Kileen, Texas. Also five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Jennifer Phifer Strange with husband Micah and sons Noel and Isaac, and Emily Phifer Menefee with husband Craig, all of Shreveport, Louisiana; Loren Bunjes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Andrew and Kristin Bunjes, of Kileen, Texas.
The family expresses gratitude to the staff of The Cottages at The Glen for their loving care, which tasted especially sweet in Henrietta's last bowl of ice cream.
The family will receive visitors from 5-6:30 pm Friday, January 21, at Kings Highway Christian Church, where a memorial service will be held at 10 am Saturday. Memorials may be made to King's Highway Christian Church.
