"John Elmer Day"
"John Elmer Day was born October 8, 1867, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio and passed away at 9:30 p.m. on January 3, 1944, at the Stansfield nursing home in this city at the age of 76 years, three months, and 25 days. In 1871 he moved with his parents, Noah and Elizabeth Day, to Spencer, Clay county, Iowa, where he resided until 1891, when he came to Grants Pass to make his home.
He was married on June 1, 1893 to Miss Jessie M. Hubbard, who passed away on August 13, 1907. In 1913 he married Mrs. Mary Estella Moore, who passed away in February, 1942.
Mr. Day engaged in carpentry during his residence in this community. He had long been an active member of the First Baptist church and served for many years as Sunday school secretary and as a deacon in the church.
He is survived by: a daughter, Mrs. Edith Paddock of Portland; a son, Hubbard of Bend, Ore.; a brother Marcus C. H. Day of Bremerton, Wash.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A niece, Mrs. Ivah Johnson, resides in Grants Pass.
Three children preceded their father in death; Irene and Audrey passing away in infancy and Charlotte Elaine passing in 1931 at the age of sixteen.
Funeral services were conducted at the L. B. Hall funeral parlors at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6. Rev. Harold A. Shaw of the First Baptist church officiatiing. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery near Grants Pass."
