The son of William & Susan (Sides) Cole, in 1860 he was a boat builder living with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lebanon October 18, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 28 as a private with Co. I, 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. On June 20, 1864, he transferred to the U.S. Navy, but no record of that service was located.

He also enlisted with the post-war army in Washington DC September 9, 1867, assigned to Co. C, 44th U.S. Infantry, and discharged by special order January 15, 1868, at Washington DC, a private. The specific reason for the early discharge is not stated.

He allegedly married Margaret A. Boggs August 1, 1871, in Washington DC [unconfirmed] and fathered Susan (b. @1876 - married a Springer). They divorced July 10, 1884, and he married Emma Isabelle Creswell May 15, 1883, allegedly in Delta, York County, fathering William Jackson (b. 01/??/84, d. 03/20/03), John S. (b. 04/25/87), Emma Isabelle (b. 05/25/89, d. 11/09/90), Keziah (b. 02/18/91, d. 02/23/97), Donald Cameron (b. 05/14/93), Uel Walker (b. 10/27/95), Anna Etta (b. 05/05/98 - married Elmer M.
