The son of Franklin & Isabella Cresswell, in 1860 he was a shoemaker allegedly living in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service with three regiments:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster July 19, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. C, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863. At muster-out, the army docked his final pay for loss of cartridge box, waist belt, cartridge box belt, and bayonet scabbard.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 13, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). On May 31, 1864, he transferred to Co. G, 190th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service when the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps ended its existence, and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865.
The Pennsylvania Archives ARIAS card for the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves wrongly asserts he served "9 mon. in Co. C, 122nd Reg. P.V.," which is impossible given that the 122nd Pennsylvania and 135th Pennsylvania co-existed.

After returning from the army, he married Emaline Kuntzleman and fathered Emma Isabelle (b. 09/11/66 - married John Henry Cole). Emma was born in Delta, York County. He applied for his pension as "Cresswell" but is buried as "Creswell."
