The son of Michael & Catharine (Boyer) Brestle, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:

1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Harrisburg April 20, 1861, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. I, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861.

2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Harrisburg September 10, 1861, mustered into federal service at Camp Cameron in Washington DC October 11 as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania), and promoted to corporal October 12, 1861. He honorably discharged at term's end December 24, 1864, near Savannah, Georgia, three days after William Tecumseh Sherman's forces had captured that key city. Henry is in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Brestel" and in the company register as "Henry C. Brestle."

He reportedly married Mary McCawley (questionable - see the following paragraph) December 15, 1867, in Middletown and fathered Mary Ellen (b. 03/06/64 - married Marcus Henry Klein), Crissie Elizabeth (b. @1875 - last marriage to Alfred Lee Nelson), Roy Walter (b. 05/23/82), Blanche Belle (b. 11/25/83 - married a Farrar), and Harry Maven (b. @1886). By 1880, he was living in McKean County, Pennsylvania, but died at Stauffer Station in Westmoreland County. His middle initial is also found as "J."

UPDATED INFORMATION (from userid Anonymous with other data from the suggestion incorporated above, and additional data incorporated below):

He married Mary Ann Nagle or Finney. I have not found additional information regarding her other than in family legal documents, and none of the children's death certificates contain her name if any at all. On the marriage application of Roy Walter, he lists his mother's name as Mary McKinney. That is the only source I found showing that name.

All that seems relatively certain is that Henry's mother was named Mary. That said, the decade between child Mary Ellen's birth and that of the next reported child Crissie suggests the possibility of two mothers named Mary as it was the most common woman's first name in that era.
