A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 16 as a private with Co. G, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.

Per his obituary in the Harrisburg Evening News, he served more than twenty-five years with the state militia and received a pension for his service.

In 1890, he was living in Middletown but lived the last six years of his life with his daughter Florence at her home in Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph claims he died in the non-existent Biloxi, Tennessee, although the Harrisburg Evening News gets it right.
