He married Elizabeth Hetrick ca. 1862 and fathered Anna (b. 09/16/62 - married William Kleindopf and Daniel Shelly Koser), Catherine Elizabeth (b. 02/29/68 - married George W. Rehrer),William (b. 05/??/72), Harry (b. 05/17/74), Edith Abigail (b. 08/17/77 - married William J. Laughlin), Alice (b. 06/??/82), and Grover Cleveland (b. @02/02/86).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-nine in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 2 as a private with Co. D, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. He is in the company register as "Bretzman."
He died at his home from "mitral insufficiency [and] cardiac hypertrophy" leading to "general edema."
