"--Private, Company F, enlisted on 8/22/1861 at A. Fleshman's---1860 MCC, age 21, farmer, married to Sarah, age 23. Born 1840 in Mercer County, [West] Virginia. Son of Eli "Squire" Bailey and Charlotte Temple Bailey. Enumerated on the 1850 Census of Mercer County, [West] Virginia, age 10, residing with parents. Married to Sarah Jane Belcher in June 1860. Appears on the 3/28/1862 oath and roster of Captain Richard B. Foley's company of independent guerrilla soldiers known as the "Flat Top Copperheads". Enlisted on 6/20/1862 in Company D, 17th Virginia Cavalry. Captured at Nineveh, Virginia on 11/12/1864. Died 5/13/1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland."
