Thomas was known as "The General" because he served as an ensign in Captain Hugh Patrick's regiment from Lancaster County in 1747 and 1756. At the beginning of the Revolution, he was quoted as saying "Washington cannot start this war with the British and not have me a part of it."
Thomas had at least three daughters with his first wife, whose name is unknown. He remarried to Isabella Polk, daughter of John and Frances Polk, and had six additional children. His will dated 1777 was probated in Lancaster County and his estate was valued at almost 9,000 pounds. Isabella remarried to George McCullough.
