A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 26, 1864, mustered into federal service at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg September 1, as an unassigned private with the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry (60th Pa), and honorably discharged May 27, 1865. Although his tombstone and pension index list him with Co. D, he is in the company register with the unassigned men. This is a commonly found situation that appears to mean that while he was never formally assigned to a company he performed his service with Co. D.
He married Phebe O. Miles ca. 1869 in Newport, Perry County, and fathered Sarah M. "Sallie" (b. 09/19/68 - married William Heikson and Louis Schmeh), Miles William (b. 05/29/70), Clara (b. 02/14/77 - married Harry C. Jones), W. S. Hancock (b. 05/??/79 [?] - in the 1880 census), John O. (b. 06/10/79 [?] - not in the 1880 census), Margaret E. (b. 09/29/81 - married Harry Dettling), and Harry E. (b. 02/13/84). In 1870 and 1880, he was living with his family in Millerstown, Perry County, but later relocated to Harrisburg where he died from "acute bronchitis."
