The son of German-born Peter & Hannah Hoover Leighty [sic], in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in or near Franklin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the grossly understated age of twenty-seven in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. E, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. He is in the company register as "Lichty." The gross age difference may actually be a clerical error as his age had to have been known prior to being conscripted.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at the stated age of thirty-seven in Harrisburg February 15, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 30, 1865.

As late as 1880 he was still living in Franklin County, but he died in Steelton, Dauphin County, from "general physical debility" with "bronchial catarrh" a contributing factor. His death certificate spells his surname "Leighty" while his obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph spells is "Leichty."
