The son of Samuel & Marie (Lau) Arnold, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Franklin Township, York County, Pennsylvania. By 1864, he stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:

1- Enlisted as a substitute in York County October 25, 1862, overstating his age by two years, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private with Co. H, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.

2- Enlisted in Harrisburg July 13, 1864, and mustered into federal service there July 20 as a private with Co. G, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company September 4, 1864, in Baltimore, Maryland.

3- Enlisted and mustered into state service at Baltimore September 6, 1864, as a private with Jones' Independent Company that soon was federally mustered as Co. C, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 17, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Balsley and fathered Mary L. ( b. @1867 ), John S. ( b. 08/17/77 ),
Anna Thompson ( b. 02/17/71 - married J. Robert Barnett ),
Elizabeth B. ( b. 04/??/76 ), and Sallie ( b. @1877 ).

In 1870-80, he lived in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, in 1890 resided in Harrisburg, but died at his daughter Anna's home from "chronic interstitial nephritis."
