The son of George & Lydia (Etter) Sheesley, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of twenty-two in Dauphin County October 29, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a corporal with Co. C, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a sergeant with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to 1st sergeant September 5, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.
He married Elizabeth Walters ca. 1865 and fathered Edward John - or vice-versa - (b. 09/18/65), Sarah Walter (b. 03/24/69), George A. (b. 01/22/74, d. 01/19/94), and Charles W. (b. 11/17/74). On November 29, 1918, he entered the soldiers' home at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, where he died from "mitral insufficiency."
