He married Martha Hull, but she died February 6, 1857. He then married Sarah Jane Crist March 23, 1859, and fathered John C. (b. 07/30/59), Luther F. (b. 11/18/62), Anna C. (b. 01/08/64), Ella J. (b. 09/22/66), Joseph E. (b. 03/16/70) and Harry C. (b. 03/28/74). In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living somewhere in York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found with certainty in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had auburn hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 5, 1864, and mustered into federal service there February 16, 1864. On March 23, 1865, he transferred to Co. C, 188th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 14, 1865, at City Point, Virginia. He is in the company register as "Drawbach," which is likely how it was pronounced.

On or about April 1, 1880, he deserted his family and thereafter refused to support them. The couple later sought a divorce but apparently never obtained it. He died at his home at age 78-7-13 from "heart failure & senility." His obituary spells his surname "Drawbaugh" as do at least two of his children, but his tombstone says "Drorbaugh."
