The son of William & Mary (Ross) Bumbaugh, in 1860 he was a mill worker and painter living with his family in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted with the regular army and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 15, 1862, as a private with Co. H, 18th U.S. Infantry. He later transferred to Co. D, date as yet unknown, and honorably discharged at term's end July 15, 1865, at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.

He married Ellen C. Weaver and fathered the children you see linked below. A railroader during much of his post-war life, he died at the Harrisburg State Hospital from "general arteriosclerosis" [and] senility" with "hypostatic pneumonia" a contributing factor.
