He graduated from Partridge Military Institute (operated by Alden Partridge, who later founded Norwich University) in 1847, worked in his father's metal business and other shops, and became a machinist.
He later operated an iron and brass foundry in partnership with his brother and managed oil companies during the original Pennsylvania boom of the 1870s.
He was then owner and operator of an Allentown rolling mill and a Harrisburg brickworks.
In 1877 he accepted an Army commission as a Major in the Paymaster Department.
He served until retiring in 1896, including postings to Maine, Oregon, the Southern U.S., and various states in the Midwest.
After retiring he lived in Walla Walla, Washington until returning permanently to Harrisburg in 1899
