The son of George W. & Jane M. (Watt) Crane, he married Margaret R. Smith August 24, 1848, in Philadelphia and fathered Viola Jane (b. 08/18/49), Mary Melissa Caroline (b. 11/21/51 - married Isaac James Davis), and Rose Anna & Anna Margaret (b. 07/31/56; Rose died the same day and Anna died 08/15/56). Margaret died August 7, 1856, and he married Laura Catherine Burr June 14, 1857, in Perry County, fathering Elmer Irvin (b. 03/08/58, d. 01/15/60), Scott Stewart (b. 02/09/60), Harry Gray (b. 02/16/63), Louisa (b. 10/20/64 - married Frank Caum), Currance Benedict (b. 03/04/67 - married John Wright Caum), and Richard Lee Head (b. 02/24/78). In 1850, he was living in Bloomfield, Perry County and went to work for the railroad in 1852, working at a variety of positions the rest of his working life. In 1860, he was living with his family in Harrisburg, Dauphin County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service a Philadelphia (although his obituary in Altoona Tribune claims Perry County, probably erroneously), as an unassigned private with the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry (65th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company June 5, 1865. The aforementioned obituary also claims he enlisted "at the outbreak" and "served three years," neither of which is true.

He died at his Harrisburg home from "edema of lungs" with "chronic arthritis & myocarditis with chronic parenchymatous nephritis" contributing factors. He had been a member of Simmons Post No. 116, G.A.R.
