The son of Philip & Elizabeth (Schenk) Ensminger, in 1860 he was a clerk living with his family in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of twenty and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 2, 1861, as a private with Co. F, 25th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 1, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the overstated age of twenty-two in Harrisburg July 22, 1872, mustered into federal service there August 1 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. A, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 7, 1863.
3. Enlisted at the correctly stated age of twenty-two and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 27, 1864, as captain of Co. G, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.

He continued with the military on a local and state level during his post-war years, first with Harrisburg's 1st City Zouaves Militia as a 2nd lieutenant and later with the National Guard, rising to the rank of major, the source of his rank shown on the tombstone.

He married Sarah C. Fought December 25, 1866, and fathered Edgar Irving (b. 10/03/68) and Amy Florence (b. 10/03/68). Sarah died August 7, 1870, and he married Nancy Jane Charles December 30, 1872 or 73 in Harrisburg and fathered Eugene Charles (b. 02/21/74), Grace Stevenson (b. 12/29/76), and George Hursh & John Tyler (b. 04/26/78). Cause of his death is listed as a "strangulated hernia." He was a member of Harrisburg's Simmons Post No. 118, G.A.R.
