In 1860, he was a blacksmith presumably living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 23, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 27 as a private with Co. H, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.

He married Emeline Amelia Glassmyer ca. 1869, but children, if any, are unknown. Emeline died in 1894, and he married Rachel Jennie Sharp May 14, 1895, children, if any, unknown. Cause of his death is listed as "cancer of the bladder."
