A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of twenty-one at Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, November 30, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois, February 27 as a private with Co. H, 56th Illinois Infantry. The reason for the unusually long period between enlistment and muster is as yet unknown. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864 (again an unusually , at Boyds Station, Alabama, re-mustered April 28, 1864, at Huntsville, and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas.
He married Anna lnu., but no children were found. By no later than 1880, he was back in Pennsylvania and living in Harrisburg, where he died at his home from "aortic regurgitation." His obituaries spell his surname "Garret."
The birth date shown above, although from his tombstone, is questionable. His stated age at enlistment is of little help as it is obviously an overstatement. The only question is by how much? A fifteen to twenty-one lie would be an unusually large whopper. According to the censuses, he was six years of age in 1850, thirty-six in 1880, and sixty-four in 1910. He is not found in the other censuses. It would appear that 1844 is the most likely birth year as the 1850 census is the most believable because it lists him in context with his siblings.
