A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Rochester, Beaver County, May 15, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 21, 1861, as a private with Co. F, 10th Pennsylvania Reserves (39th Pennsylvania Infantry), but discharged by surgeon's certificate for an as yet unknown illness October 15, 1862. He is in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file with a middle initial of "J."
He served with the post-war U.S. Navy, allegedly enlisting August 15, 1867, and honorably discharging October 13, 1870, that according to his obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph and not military records. That same obituary claims he was on Lt. Robert E. Peary's global circumnavigation in 1869. If that is a reference to the future Arctic explorer, then the claim is erroneous because Peary was then only thirteen years old and did not enlist with the navy until 1881. If Jones had circumnavigated the globe, it was with some other officer, but a non exhaustive online search for the event revealed no evidence of its occurrence.
He married Martha E. Johnson and fathered Walter Milford (b. 08/??/75). He died at his home from "chronic interstitial nephritis" and had been a member of Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R.
