Roy D. Hissong, 94, Matney Morningside Manor, retired teacher, died Saturday at the nursing home after a long illness.
Services will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday in the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. The Rev. A. T. Washington of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by Landmark Lodge 103 AF&AM.
Mr. Hissong was born Feb. 9, 1888, in Crawfordsville, Iowa, and lived his early years on a family farm. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1906 and received his bachelor of science degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1913.
He taught science in several schools in eastern Iowa, one of which he was the principal. He taught one year at South Dakota State Teachers' College at Madison and also taught at Redfield, S.D.
He married Gladys McCargar April 7, 1918, at Redfield. She died Dec. 14, 1957, in Sioux City. He taught general science at West Junior High School for two years beginning in 1922. For 31 years he taught biology at Central High School. His large classroom was filled with hundreds of specimen of plants and animals and with many photographs, since he was an avid photographer.
He had been a member of the First Methodist Church since 1925. He was an active member and officer in the Sioux City Bird Club, member of the Sioux City Camera Club, winning several awards in national competitions. He also was active in the Sioux city Stamp Club.
A Mason for more than 60 years, Mr. Hissong was a member of Pomegranate Lodge 408 AF&AM at Alta, Iowa. He was an Army veteran of World War I.
There were no survivors.
