The monument marks the mass grave of the approximately 155 Union soldiers killed by Confederate guerillas led by Bloody Bill Anderson near Centralia, Missouri. Frank and Jesse James participated in this fight as members of Anderson's guerilla band. The inscription reads: "The remains of the members of Companies 'A' 'G' and 'H' 39th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry who were killed in action at Centralia Mo. on the 27th day of September 1864 are interred here." The monument shows the names of all the soldiers buried in the grave.
