ESTILL PAILEY DEAD
Estill Bailey, one of the most widely known and highly esteemed citizens of this county, died at the home of his son, Howe Bailey, near New Hope Church, about five miles from this city, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. the deceased had been in failing health for some time, but his condition was not regarded as serious until only a few days ago.
Mr. Bailey was a son of the late John C. Bailey and was a native of this city, having been born at the old home place near Beaver Pond Spring, about two miles southwest of Bluefield.
When the Civil War broke out, he was among the first volunteers from this section to leave home and enlist in the Confederate Army. He rendered faithful service during the entire four years and was said to have been among the bravest of his company. He was,for six years, clerk of the Mercer County Court, having succeeded A.J. Hearn. Mr. Bailey was the only member of the Democratic party elected during that campaign. He had been a faithful member of the Christian Church for years.
He was genial and kind-hearted and was greatly beloved by all who knew him intimately. He is survived by his widow and seven children - Eddie, Wade, Walter, Wirt, Howe and Mrs. Elizabeth Roseman, all of this county. He also leaves one brother and one sister, Granville Bailey of Graham and Mr. J. Russell Calfee of this city. He was seventy-nine years of age.
The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon from the home of his son, Howe Bailey, at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.L. McKinney and Rev. W.M. Bullard of Tazewell, former pastor of the Christian Church of this city. Interment was made in the Calfee Cemetery.
