Husband's 3rd Great Grandpa. Eighth child of Isaac Halbert & Elizabeth O'Daniel.

Married Mary Cottingham, April 13, 1813 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY. Children: Isaac Newton, Mary Cottingham, State Senator William Cottingham, Henry, Harrison Osborn, James S., Elizabeth, Sidney.

Bill Halbert, [email protected], 18 Oct 2004: "Stephen Halbert saw military action as a Pvt. in Capt. Aaron Stratton's Co. Col John Poague's Regmt., Ky. Mtd. Vol. Milta., and in the campaign of 1813, ending in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, Oct 5, 1813, where the great Tecumseh was slain and the British and Indian power was broken in the Northwest. Stephen was a farmer on Salt Lick subsequently, and at his death on Cabin Creek. He also served as Deputy Sheriff for two years. He was not successful as a farmer, but managed to raise a notable family of five sons and three daughters. His wife, Mary, was a beautiful woman and her life and character were as beautiful as her person. She experienced a strong influence on her children. She died Jan 29, 1829, and Stephen then married Priscilla Watkins, daughter of Joseph Watkins, Sep 12, 1829. Sometime after Stephen's death, Priscilla took her children to Illinois and settled on a tract of 160 acres granted to Stephen for his military service.

"[Stephen & Priscilla's children,] Joseph and Priscilla died young and unmarried. John and Hester survived their youth but nothing is known of their descendants."
