MAJ US AIR FORCE WORLD WAR II, KOREA
------------------------
UNION SPRINGS - John Franklin Daly, 86, Union Springs, and formerly of Cayuga and North Syracuse, died Friday, June 4, 2010, at Wayne County Nursing Home. Born in Ilion, N.Y., he was the oldest son of the late Harry and Rachel Swift Daly.

He was a graduate of Mohawk High School and a 1948 graduate of Syracuse University. John was a veteran who proudly served during World War II as the pilot of a B-24 bomber in the 13th Air Force. He flew 37 combat missions in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with five Campaign Stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He flew five squadron leads and flew as an escort to General Douglas MacArthur on an honorary flight mission in the Pacific. John and his bomber crew remained close friends after returning home from active duty. They held several crew reunions and attended some major 13th Air Force reunions. John remained in the Air Force reserves flying out of Syracuse, until he retired in 1963 with the rank of major. John was an independent insurance agent and owner of the R.G. Wright Agency for 20 years until he retired in 1986.

John strongly believed in volunteer service to the community and his church. He served as a board member and past president of the Comprehensive Training Center; a board member for the United Way of Cayuga County; board member and past president of the Cayuga County Traffic Safety Council and the Cayuga County Environmental Management Council. He was a member of the Donald R Ward Post of the American Legion. John was a member of the Cayuga United Methodist Church where he served on several church boards. John and Norma served as leaders of the church youth group. John especially enjoyed singing bass in the church choir. John was also supportive of the Union Springs School District. The Dalys hosted many 'Meet the School Board Candidate Nights' in their home. John also served as the chairman of the school district's annual meeting for several years. In 1966-67 the family hosted an AFS exchange student, Maria Stape, from Brazil. John and Norma enjoyed camping in the Adirondacks, celebrating 60 continuous years camping at Fish Creek Ponds State Campground. They shared many summers with a group of friends they met there.

John loved water-skiing and teaching other people to ski as well. During the winter, John and Norma often returned to the mountains to watch and ride the Bobsleds at Mt. Van Hoovenberg outside Lake Placid. John and his wife also loved to travel and experienced many memorable trips together including domestic and foreign travel.
