AURELIUS — Harold R. Hoskins, 96, of Aurelius, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Auburn Community Hospital.

Harold was the son of the late Delos L. and Frances Webster Hoskins. Harold, a third generation family farmer, was born Jan. 5, 1921 on the farm his grandfather started. In an era when many family farms were bought out by bigger enterprises or turned into residential/commercial real estate, it was Harold’s passion for farming, business savvy and integrity that led to the expansion and diversification from a smaller family farm into a larger multifaceted operation.

In addition to farming, starting back in the 1940s, Harold formed a business relationship utilizing Case tractors to snowplow the streets of Auburn which eventually turned into a private snowplow business built on service and loyalty to area businesses and neighbors. No matter what Harold committed to, it had to be done well. He only harvested the best beans, baled the finest hay, and planted the corn in perfectly straight rows. The books were accurate to the penny, all equipment put away each evening, and the property had to be perfectly manicured. You would always see him out on his John Deere lawnmower.

But family came first and the tractor kicked into high gear many times in order to wrap up the day’s work to see the kids perform in the band, help the boys with their Eagle Scout projects, or do some dinner and dancing with his friends. Harold still found time to give back to his local community as a Charter Member of the Aurelius Fire Department. He loved his Half Acre Union Church where he met and married his first love, Evelyn. He devoted hours as a trustee and active church member and had hoped to someday see the new church built.

Harold was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Pinckney Hoskins, and his brother, Delos “De” Hoskins.

He is survived by his children, Stuart (Colleen), of Petersburg, N.Y., Stanley (Peggy), Janet (David) Klimek, Lynn (Tina), Lloyd (Georgette), and Wayne (Bonnie), all of Auburn; 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
