Richard E. Drury born in 1920 in North Rose, N.Y., passed away on Monday, December 5th, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.

A decorated WWII Veteran and P.O.W., he received the Distinguished Service Cross for Heroic Action in the Battle of Tunisia and was awarded the Silver Star medal for the gallantry in action and disregard for his own personal safety displayed on 1/13/45 in Belgium. Drury was given a battlefield commission of Second Lt. and the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the U.S. in Belgium and Germany. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Lt. Drury was captured by Germans during counter attack at Badetz and taken to Altengrabow in Germany, where he was later instrumental in the rescue of 19,000 Allied P.O.W.'s.

Preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Claire and wife of 67 years, Thelma Witchey Drury.

His survivors include a son, Tony Drury (Ripley), and a daughter, Sandy Steinle (Ron), 2 grandchildren, Lindsay and Larry Drury; several nieces and nephews.

A huge thank you to our hospice support, Amedisys RN Jason and staff and especially to Richard's caregivers, Daniela and Sam Butuza. He was given the best care we could ever imagined You all are truly our "Angel's". Thanks for the much needed hugs during this difficult time.

Arrangements by Vaughan's Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
