GREENSBORO, NC - Greensboro, North Carolina Fire Captain William Caviness, 35, collapsed at 10:39 am while running the South Loop of the Chicago Marathon at 1200 South Indiana Avenue near Roosevelt Road, only five hundred yards from the finish line.

He was participating in the Marathon to raise money for International Association of Fire Fighters Burn Foundation burn victims.

Several emergency physicians immediately rushed to the aid of the fallen runner. They reportedly were able to get Caviness' heart beating again, and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 12:03 pm, approximately an hour and forty-five minutes later, at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

Authorities suspect Caviness suffered cardiac arrest. An autopsy on Monday, October 10 was inconclusive, pending the results of toxicology tests, which could take four to six weeks, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Services were held on Saturday, October 15 at 1 pm at Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro, followed by visitation with the family, and a pot luck meal in the church Fellowship Hall.

He was an eight year veteran of the Greensboro Fire Department, having joined in March 2003. He was promoted to Captain on December 1, 2010 and was serving as Captain of a fire engine crew at Station 14 at 3633 Summit Avenue. He previously worked for Station 5 at 1401 Westover Terrace.

The information in this paragraph was supplied to me courtesy of Captain Caviness' father:
Will was awarded the Medal of Honor (highest award there is) by the International Association of Firefighters. He is also on the memorial wall at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs, CO.
