Roman Catholic Cardinal. He served as the head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York from 2000 until 2009. He received a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in Illinois and later attended the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. He was ordained there in 1957. In 1960, he was appointed assistant vice-rector and repetitor of Moral Theology and Canon Law at the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. In 1964, he attained his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University and later was assigned to serve as secretary to John Cardinal Cody of Chicago. For fourteen years (1971 until 1985), he served as a judge of the Tribunal of Sacred Roman Rota. In 1985, he was consecrated a bishop and served as Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar for Education of the Archdiocese of New York from 1985 until 1988. In 1988, he became the Third Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. In 2001, he was elevated to Cardinal and following the terrorist attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001, he played a pivotal part with the city's dealing of the ordeal. in 2005, he participated in the election of Pope Benedict XVI. He retired in 2009 and became Archbishop Emeritus of New York.
