Matilde Moisant was the second female to obtain a pilot's license. In September 1911, she broke the women's altitude world record by flying to 1,200 feet.

Born in Earl Park, Indiana on September 13, 1878. Matilde Moisant was the second woman in the United States to receive a pilot's licence. She learned to fly at Moisant Aviation School on Long Island, along with aviator Harriet Quimby, and earned her licence on August 13, 1911. Moisant made her exhibition debut at the Nassau Boulevard Aviation Meet where she won the Rodman-Wanamaker Altitude Trophy by flying her 50 hp Moisant aeroplane to an altitude of 1,200 feet. On April 14,1912, in Wichita Falls , Texas, her last scheduled flight, she survived as her airplane burst into flames upon landing, due to a fuel leak in the fuel tank. Moisant was pulled from the burning plane with her clothes on fire but her heavy wool suit saved her from serious injury. She died in Glendale, California on Febuary 5, 1964
