Western outlaw. Black Face Charley Bryant belonged to the Dalton gang and was part of the group that committed train robberies near Wharton and Red Rock, Oklahoma in 1891. Deputy US Marshal Ed Short captured Bryant in his hotel room at Hennessey. Short and his prisoner boarded a train to Wichita, Kansas, where Bryant was to be held for trial at the US District Court. Short left a shackled Bryant in the care of the express car messenger while he stepped outside. Bryant managed to get hold of a pistol and, when Short came back inside, Bryant shot him several times. Short managed to return fire, mortally wounding the outlaw. By the time the train reached Waukomis, both men were dead.
