Cousin to John Wesley Hardin who dispatched Alex and Joe Hardin to Indianola, Texas to spy on William E Sutton so that the Taylor clan could kill him. On May 26, 1874, John Wesley Hardin was celebrating his 21st birthday in Comanche when Deputy Sheriff Charles M. Webb attempted to arrest him. The resulting shootout ended with Webb fatally wounded and Hardin wounded in the side. On June 1, Captain John R Waller of the Texas Rangers leading a group of Rangers came upon John Wesley Hardin and some of his men. In the shoot out that followed Waller reported, "Barekman and Anderson, two of Hardin's gang, fired on some of my men and several citizens. My men returned the fire killing both Barekman and Anderson. I exchanged several shots with John Wesley Hardin and Jim Taylor wounding Hardin in the shoulder but he made good his escape being well-mounted."

He was the son of Samuel Hamilton Barkman, born on December 13, 1822, in Knox County Indiana. He died on October 27, 1860. His first wife Sarah Susan Cott who died before 1858.

His wife was the the sister of Alexander Hamilton "Ham" Anderson thus making him a cousin by marriage to Hardin.
