Corporal Ames was the Color Guard or Flag Bearer for Company G, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.

Enlisted 21 Aug 1862 as a Private from Orland, Me. On the same day he mustered to active service in Co. G; 18th Infantry Regiment; Me. Volunteers. On 19 Dec 1862 he transferred to Co. G; 1st Me. Heavy Artillery. On 22 Jun 1864 he became a POW at Petersburg, Va. and was exchanged 27 Feb 1865. He was discharged 20 Jun 1865.
