U.S. Continental Congressman. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Princeton College in 1760, a successful mercantile businessman and a early advocate for American Independence. During the Revolutionary War, he was active in the Philadelphia Committee of Safety and served a Lieutenant Colonel in the Pennsylvania Militia Regiment. In 1777, he was elected as a liberal Whig to the 1st Continental Congress, serving until 1778. After his congressional term, he was appointed justice of the court of common pleas in 1778 and was one of the founders of the University of the State of Pennsylvania, in 1779. He also a trustee of Princeton College, (1779-1808), served on the board of aldermen of Philadelphia, (1792-94) and as auditor general of Pennsylvania in 1794. He died at age 70 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
