Opera Singer. Born Renata Ersilia Clotilde Tebaldi, she was one of the greatest and most versatile soprano singers in recent history, and was especially renowned for her interpretation performances in operas by composers Verdi and Puccini. In 1946 she was chosen by conductor Toscanini to sing at the re-opening celebration concert at La Scala Theatre in Milan, which had been shut during World War II. Considered Maria Callas' greatest rival, she made her American début as 'Aïda' at the San Francisco Opera, followed by 'Desdemona' at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Then she appeared regularly at the Met as 'Mimi' in "La Bohème," as 'Cio-Cio-San' in "Madama Butterfly," 'Tosca' and 'Violetta' in a staging of "La Traviata" created specially for her.
