The Second Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Melbourne, Monsignor Thomas Joseph Carr was baptized on May 10, 1839, at Moylough, County Galway, Ireland. His father, a farmer of some substance, sent him to St. Jarlath's College, Tuam, for his early education. By 1916 he was suffering from cancer and a trip to New Zealand was to no avail. He died in Melbourne on May 6, 1917, aged 78, and was buried in his cathedral.
