A native of Freising, Bavaria, Germany, Johannes a Cruce Brenninger was the author of various publications, the most renowned being "The Carmelite Directory of the Spiritual Life". Residing in Rome, he was involved in the academic and spiritual formation of Carmelites. Authoring the said Directory in the 1940's originally in Latin, it was soon translated into various other languages, including Italian, Spanish, English, Maltese and others. Originally intended to assist novices in their Carmelite formation, it soon it became considered as a classic on its own and a bestseller as a treatise or compendium for the spiritual journey. Lecturing Mariology, mystical theology and Hebrew at the Collegio Internazionale Sant'Alberto for twelve years, he served as Assistant General of the Order from 1925 until his death.
