Former Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Bamberg, Germany, Msgr. Elmar Maria Kredel was born on February 24, 1922, in Nuremberg and entered the Military Service during the Second World War. Following his release from captivity from the Allies, he entered Bamberg's Diocesan Seminary, being ordained to the priesthood at the age of 28, on July 30, 1950.

He obtained a doctorate in theology from Innsbruck's University and later from the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome, and aged 55, was appointed as Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Bamberg, receiving his episcopal consecration on July 2, 1977, from Archbishop Josef Schneider, assisted by Bishops Josef Stangl and Martin Wiesend, thus being the 73rd bishop since the diocese's foundations.

On May 22, 1978, Msgr. Kredel was named Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Federal Armed Forces of Germany, an office he held until his resignation at the age of 68, on November 30, 1990.

Recipient of the Grand Order of Merit of The Federal Republic of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bavarian Medal of Honor and the Golden Citizen Medal of the City Hollfeld, Kredel was furthermore a conventual chaplain of the Sovereign Maltese Knight Order, honorary citizen of the cities of Bamberg and Hollfeld and senator ad honorem of the Otto Friedrich University.

Chairperson of the Diözesancaritasvebandes in the Welfare Care, providing the building of kindergartens and old people's homes, Archbishop Kredel led almost for almost ten years the Commission of the German Bishop's Conference for Social and Socially Charitable Questions. Resigning the pastoral government of his see due to health reasons on March 31, 1994, the Archbishop died on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the age of 86.
